John Nyagunga
Counting his blessings over a prospective bumper harvest
John Nyagunga, aged 73, is a member of Ahero Apondo FFS, Maseno East Diocese. He has 8 household members and farms on 3 acres of land. He incorporates the use of compost manure as taught in FFS, in growing crops including maize, beans, butternut, sugar cane and vegetables. Maize yield from his one-acre plot has increased from 5 to 15 bags. He uses trenches to control soil erosion. In addition, John has planted 63 trees that include 20 Eucalyptus, 15 pines, 20 mangoes and 18 avocados. His 4 cows, 8 sheep and 30 chickens provide the necessary animal protein to his family as well as extra income from the sale of milk and livestock. He is grateful for FFS training, which he says has changed his life and that of his family. He has embraced modern farming technology, which has enabled him to produce enough food to feed his family and is fully employed on the farm.
John has shared the knowledge learnt at FFS with 7 neighbours, which has made his community like the programme. His main challenges are the intermittent flooding and drought that ravage the Ahero Area of Kisumu County every year. Kingdom Life Bible Study has changed his life. He says that he likes reading the Bible and is now more prayerful. He testifies that through prayer, squirrels that used to destroy his crops have disappeared.
