Kalunga Lusambya

He left chance for precision.

Kalunga Lusambya, 35 years old, is a beneficiary of the Farmer Field School Umoja, located 25 km along the Kalima road in Libuyu village in the DRC.

Strong and determined, he now regrets the years spent working hard without real benefits . “I’ve just left chance for precision!” he exclaimed proudly.

In the past, Kalunga cultivated nearly one hectare of paddy rice mixed with other crops such as maize and groundnuts. Today, thanks to the project, he has shifted to vegetable farming, a more productive and manageable practice.

Previously, it took him three to four weeks, sometimes even a month, to prepare a 100 m² field. Now, only two to three days are enough to prepare a 15 by 20-meter plot, with triple the income from his first harvest.

For him, the project is a true reward for lost time and effort. With smaller plots yet higher yields, he can now engage in other income generating activities.

He shared: “I used to think that plant-based treatments were only for the rich and big companies. But now, thanks to this project, I use them myself, and I can hardly believe it!”

Kalunga plans to expand his farm for greater production. “A well-cared-for soil never betrays,” he concluded confidently.
